Cijigong

Cijigong (Ciji Temple) is located in downtown Syuejia District and it was first constructed in the 9th Year of Emperor Qianlong. Ciji Temple has a majestic appearance and is provided with front and rear halls. The front hall provides a seat for Baosheng Dadi (Life Protection Emperor) while the rear hall provides a seat for Avalokiteśvara Buddha. The halls are furnished with carved and painted pillars and dragons wrapped around the stone columns. Traditional architecture and historical art have been provided, including intricate porcelain works created by Master Yeh, Wang of Koji (northern Vietnam) as well as tile mosaics by Master He Jin-long. Stone lions and flagpoles are arrayed to the left and right of the entranceway to create a most somber and majestic atmosphere.
The Ministry of the Interior has rated Cijigong as a 3rd Class National Historic Site. The Temple has over 800 years of history, and the divine image of Kaiji Er Dadi (Second Emperor and Founder) was transferred from Baijiao Temple of Quan Prefecture in Fujian Province. This image was formally transferred by a member of the Li Clan from Baijiao. It is the only image in Taiwan with such a long and illustrious history, attracting many supplicants and devotees to pay their respects to this legendary figure. The 11th Day of the 3rd Month on the agricultural calendar is the temple's main festival of Shang Baijiao Ye Zu (visiting Baijiao to honor the ancestors). A Wugong Zhen (centipede formation of man-powered tricycles) that meanders onwards leads the religious parade. The locals believe that allowing the Centipede Formation to move through town would help ward off disasters and malicious intents. The event commemorates the settlers from Baijiao Village of Fujian Province in China who traveled across the seas to create a new home. As the rites were held to honor their faraway homeland, the festival was thus called Shang Baijiao (visiting Baijiao).

Pigeon Carrying Contest

These competitions begin on the 22nd Day of the 2nd Month on the Lunar Calendar. Farmers from Sanqing Village (Dingzhou and Hongqie settlements) would often use the resting period after spring planting to engage in this contest where different hongjiaoling (wood whistles on red feet, the red feet being the pigeons) would be secured behind the pigeons which would then fly back to their nests while the whistles give off a humming sound. This folk competition has attracted visitors from around Taiwan.

Jheng's Landing and Shang Baijiao Commemoration Stele

After Jheng Cheng-gong came to Taiwan during the last years of the Ming Dynasty, a number of Ming loyalist soldiers and civilians landed at the banks of Touqianliao River at Syuejia. These early settlers then welcomed the image of Baosheng Dadi (Life Protection Emperor) dating back to the Song Dynasty to serve as the founding deity of the Syuejia Temple. At every 11th Day of the 3rd Month of the Lunar Calendar, devotees from around Taiwan would gather at the riverbanks to perform the Shang Baijiao Ancestral Commemoration Rites to express their gratitude for the work of the early pioneers. A stele with inscriptions has also been placed to mark this event.

Founding Place of the Tainan Clique

The Xintougang Settlement is located in Guanghua Village of Syuejia District on the south banks of Jishui River and next to South 1 highway. When entering the hamlet, one would be greeted with a plaque that introduces the landmark: "Xintougang settlement is bounded by protective dragon spirits. Despite its tiny population of 30 to 40 households, Xintougang is the place of birth of many political and commercial leaders such as Wu San-lian, Gong Lian-jhen, Wu Siou-ci, Wu Zun-sian, Wu Jyun-jie, Wu Jyun-sheng, and Wu Jhen-long. No other place in Taiwan could boast such a group of illustrious members, making it one of the most amazing source of talented people in Taiwan." These individuals have proved, through their deeds, the miraculous nature of their homeland.

Originally a riverbank settlement, Fazaitou was eventually abandoned and naturally reclaimed by the surrounding wetland ecology. The wetland currently occupies a total area of 20 hectares. There are over one hundred bird species which include the black-faced spoonbill, a rare bird that has been classified as endangered by international organizations, the African sacred ibis, and the whiskered tern as well as numerous crabs and plants. This place is perfect for conducting eco-tours and trips for personally appreciating the beauty of natural ecology.
